Alumni Update
We have been very quiet the past few years but HMA'ss new principal, Hugh Winn, has awakened us. We have been operating as a committee of volunteers to organize the alumni weekend events. We have not been able to find someone to act as our President so until then, we will work as a committee. If you would like to be involved with the alumni association, please, we welcome you. You may be involved in many different ways. It has been really nice to reconnect with old friends and acquaintances, if you join us we're sure you will feel the same way. If you have an interest, please contact us by email at hmabusiness@aol. com. We appreciate all those who have participated in our weekend event and all those behind the scenes volunteers. We hope to hear from you soon.
Until next time... A hui hou

Aloha Oe, Dear Friends, Until We Meet Again!

Lemuel Leialoha
9/24/1939 – 5/8/2009
Lemuel “Lem” Keala Leialoha passed away on Friday, May 8, 2009, at the age of 69 from an aortic aneurysm. He was a graduate of the Class of ’58. Lem had six different jobs throughout his life - one of which was serving as business manager at HMA for four years from 1974 to 1979. Lem spearheaded Homecoming 2008. He dedicated several years of his life to making Homecoming 2008 a success. And it was! As soon as he finished HC ’08, his dream was to have a homecoming at Pacific Union College for HMA alumni who reside in Northern California.

Yaeko Shimada
3/18/1920 – 1/15/2009
Yaeko Shimada was an honorary graduate of the Class of 1977. She was a former teacher at HMEI, serving the Seventh-day Adventist Church educational system in Hawaii for 38 years. Miss Shimada died in January 2009, after falling backwards and hitting her head which caused internal bleeding. Many HMA alumni remember her as one of the strictest, yet most loving teachers. She requested no memorial service, but said if people wished to honor her, they could make a contribution to the Yaeko Shimada Memorial Scholarship Fund. To contribute, make checks payable to the Yaeko Shimada Scholarship Fund,  Hawaiian Mission Elementary & Intermediate School, 1415 Makiki St. Honolulu, HI 96814.

Luke Nishikawa
4/30/1986 – 11/15/2009
Luke Nishikawa, a graduate of the Class of 2004, passed away on November 15, 2008. He, along with three other Pacific Union College students, died in a car accident along the narrow, winding road connecting the isolated college town with the Napa Valley. Luke was to graduate last June as a history major. He was active in leading out in the Korean Club, taught youth Sabbath School, and participated in the campus ministry for the homeless. Luke was the son of Pastor Koji and Masumi Nishikawa. The Nishikawas serve the Kihei and Lahaina SDA Churches. Luke's sister, Christal, is also an HMA graduate.
